Without doubt, one of the many joys
of visiting France is the vast array of foods and
wines to be found and tasted in its many regions.
Be it in the street markets or restaurants, French
food seems to have a particular freshness and
savour that is unique to La Belle France. And,
what's more, it always seems to be presented with
elegance, something often lacking in other
countries.
To those of you who love to eat out, but may
not be an experienced traveller in France, and you
are in a fairly good-sized town, you may find the
choice of restaurants available a little daunting.
So, here are some useful tips to help you make
that important decisions.
First, check the
menu that's always posted outside any French
eating place, and see whether it's in your price
range. Currently, 10 francs is about £1. Then look
through the window (seriously!) to see whether
it's full of locals obviously enjoying themselves.
This is always a sure sign of good food and good
value. Finally, you'll see there is a choice of
menus, usually prix fixe, à la carte and menu
gastronomique. The latter can be easily five or
six courses, so if you have something to celebrate
or just feel like a wonderful blow-out, then this
is for you.
By the way, the owner will be
flattered to advise you on your choice of wine and
even more so if you ask for a local vintage. It's
also worth noting that certain dishes have been
created with a particular wine in mind to
accompany it.
We now leave you to explore
firstforfrance.com . You will find it to be a
fascinating journey, with tens of useful facts at
your fingertips. And of course, as much
information as anyone could need on wining and
dining in France.
